Chapter 7
Chapter 7
After his promise, Lucas started going to work on time every day.
I, on the other hand, was busy preparing for the upcoming advanced training, so I didn't pay much attention to anything else.
One weekend, a close colleague invited me to go shopping.
I told Lucas I was going out, and he seemed relieved. "That's good. I have to work overtime this weekend, so I won't be able to keep you company. Go enjoy yourself with your colleague."
But then, right after he said he had to work overtime, I saw him at a children's themed restaurant in the mall.
He was holding Lily on his lap, with Jessica sitting across from him.
Jessica was smiling, wiping tomato sauce from Lily's mouth.
I stood there, frozen, staring at the sight of Lucas smiling at Lily. They looked like a family of three.
My colleague nudged me, "Olivia, why are you stopping?"
I smiled and was about to look away, but I realized Lucas had spotted me.
I quickly turned to leave, but he put down Lily and ran after me.
"Olivia!"
He caught up with me, grabbing my hand. "I… Lily was crying for fries. She really wanted to come out, so I brought her."
I pulled my hand away. "It's fine. You should go back to them."
Lucas shook his head, "No, where are you going? I'll go with you."
"No need. I'm with my colleague," I replied, trying to stay calm.
But Lucas insisted. He held my hand tightly, and before we could walk away, a small hand suddenly grabbed his other hand.
"Uncle Lucas, I still want you to take me to the amusement park."
Jessica had followed us out. "Olivia, I'm so sorry. Lily is still so young and doesn't understand."
Yes, the child is young, but surely not so young as to randomly call someone "dad."
I nodded, glancing at Lucas, "You're right, children need their father's love. Lucas, you should spend more time with them."
Then I pulled my hand away and turned to leave.
Lucas let go of Lily's hand and followed me. "Olivia, don't say things like that. Please, listen to my explanation!"
Lily started crying loudly behind us.
Jessica held her, looking pitiful.
It was as if I were the evil woman who was stealing away their husband and father.
"Olivia, please, just hear me out," Lucas pleaded, grabbing my hand again, his grip firm. "It's really just for the child. She's so young, and being separated from her father is hard for her."
"She really likes me, Olivia. She's very clingy. Can you understand?"
I stopped walking and nodded, "I understand. Really, she's just a child."
But what was he asking me to understand?
In the first year of our marriage, his parents had been pushing us to have a child. They put all the pressure on me, thinking it was because I wasn't cooperating with Lucas that we hadn't gotten pregnant yet.
And Lucas's answer? He didn't like children. We should wait a little longer.
So it wasn't that he didn't like children. He just didn't want to have children with me.
Seeing him fall silent, I was about to walk away.
But he suddenly stepped in front of me, blocking my path.
"Olivia, why?"
"Why don't you get angry anymore when things like this happen?"
"What are you really thinking?"
I looked at him calmly.
He was breathing heavily, standing in my way.
But just then, his phone started vibrating.
He pulled it out, and I saw the contact name: Jessica.
Lucas answered it.
"Don't cry, what's wrong?"
"Lily's missing? How can she be missing?"
"Don't panic, I'll be there right away."
After hanging up, Lucas seemed like he wanted to explain, but I stepped aside to let him pass.
"Go quickly," I said, my voice firm.
He hesitated, looking at me one last time, then rushed off without another word.
