Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Things that had always confused me suddenly became crystal clear the moment I stopped loving him.
How could it be love if you're always giving and never receiving?
When two people are in love, if one person's efforts go unnoticed, how can that be called love?
My love had never gotten a single response from Lucas.
But I still chose to stay with him when Jessica left him, when he was at his lowest. I comforted him, and in my haze, I even married him.
At one point, I even thought about having children with him.
Looking back now, I can't believe how foolish I was.
Lucas didn't want a divorce, but I didn't hesitate with my decision to pursue advanced training.
After I landed, I went straight to the hospital to report in.
The hospital provided dorms, so after completing the check-in process, I went to settle in before heading back to the hospital.
The contact person said the doctor in charge of me was in surgery and asked me to wait.
I waited until it was dark before a tall young man walked into the office.
As the other staff members were leaving, a senior doctor patted him on the shoulder, saying, "Dr. Harrison, your little apprentice is here. She's been waiting all afternoon."
I hadn't expected Dr. Harrison to be so young.
He washed his hands, then, while drying them, glanced in my direction.
I immediately stood up and walked over. "Dr. Harrison, hello, I'm..."
He cut me off. "Olivia, right?"
He sat down at his computer and casually tossed a thick stack of materials toward me. "Familiarize yourself with these first. Tomorrow morning, follow me on rounds."
He didn't crack a smile. He was even more serious than the mentor I had during my internship.
I clutched the materials tightly and nodded.
That was the last thing he said to me.
I stayed up late reading the materials, and as a result, I nearly overslept the next morning.
Dr. Harrison didn't say anything about it. He just briefly introduced me to the rest of the team before diving into the rounds.
True to form, he asked me plenty of questions during the rounds.
His serious demeanor made me a little nervous, but luckily, I managed to answer all his questions.
Later, a more outgoing colleague joked with me, "Olivia, you're pretty impressive. Dr. Harrison is so strict, everyone who works with him gets scolded to tears on their first day. You're the exception."
Over time, I overheard more gossip about Dr. Harrison.
The young nurses and doctors couldn't help but talk about him.
They said that even though he was handsome, he always had a stern face and was so intense that he still couldn't seem to find a girlfriend.
"Hey, Olivia," one colleague teased as we were about to finish for the day, and Dr. Harrison wasn't around. "I've noticed you've been working with Dr. Harrison for a while now, and he seems kind of gentle with you. Do you think he might have feelings for you? Are you interested?"
How could Dr. Harrison be gentle with me? I just happened to always get my tasks done on time.
I was always on edge when I was around him.
I sighed and stretched. "No way, I'm already married."
As soon as the words left my mouth, there was a sudden noise behind me. I turned around instinctively and saw Dr. Harrison toss his stethoscope onto the desk. It landed with a loud thud.
My colleague jumped and quickly zipped up her bag to leave.
Just as she was about to walk out the door, she turned back and called, "Olivia, there's someone outside looking for you. Says he's your husband."
Lucas?
I stood up and went out. Sure enough, I saw Lucas standing there.
