Chapter 5
Chapter 5
They froze when they saw me. After a long pause, Jack nervously tried to explain:
"Rose, Lily had an ovarian cyst rupture. I was just worried and came to the hospital with her."
"I had no idea you were at this hospital too. How did your checkup go?"
I didn't want to engage with them and turned to leave, but Jack grabbed my arm.
He gripped my wrist angrily.
"What's with that attitude? I'm the baby's father! I'm your husband! Don't I deserve to know the results of the checkup?"
I tried to pull my arm away, but Jack held on tightly. I ended up slapping him across the face.
"Jack Wilson! You don't deserve to be a father!"
Jack seemed enraged by my slap. He tightened his grip on my wrist, his whole body radiating anger as he spoke:
"How dare you say that! Let me tell you, Rose , even if we get divorced, I'll fight for full custody of the child. Then you'll never..."
Before he could finish, my dad returned with the water and saw the scene. He immediately punched Jack in the face.
"Let me tell you, the baby is gone!"
"You want custody? Go look in the trash!"
Jack stared at me in disbelief, his finger shaking as he tried to speak.
Behind him, Lily suddenly collapsed, weakly calling out:
"Jack..."
But this time, Jack didn't respond to her. He just stared at me with bloodshot eyes.
My dad didn't want to deal with them any longer. Worried I might have complications, he quickly helped me back to my room.
When it was time for dinner, my mom had just set out the food she brought when there was a knock at the door.
The next moment, Jack walked in.
"Mom, Dad, I came to see Rose."
My dad's face immediately darkened as he replied coldly:
"Mr. Wilson, you must be joking. We old folks don't deserve to be called Mom and Dad by you."
Jack's face was full of guilt. Behind him were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson.
Mrs. Wilson entered with an awkward smile. Mr. Wilson kicked Jack before turning to me with an ingratiating look:
"Rose, we know everything now. It's all Jack's fault."
"We've given him a good scolding. He knows he was wrong."
"We're so sorry for what you've been through."
My mom glared at him, about to speak, but I squeezed her hand to stop her. I calmly replied:
"Uncle, Jack and I have been married for years. You know how he's treated me."
"But I don't want to dwell on the past. Let's meet at the Civil Affairs Bureau at 8 AM tomorrow."
Jack's face immediately went pale. He walked to my bedside and knelt down on one knee.
"Rose, I know I was wrong."
"But please, can we not get divorced? I really can't live without you."
As he spoke, tears actually started falling from his eyes.
I laughed mockingly and looked at him with disdain:
"Jack Wilson, you didn't love me when you called me petty at our wedding. You didn't love me when you took Lily on our honeymoon. Now that we're divorcing, suddenly you love me again."
"Your love sure comes cheap!"
Hearing this, Mr. Wilson grew even angrier. He punched Jack hard. Mrs. Wilson also slapped him.
But she still went easy on Jack out of motherly love. She tried to take my hand, and when I pulled away, she didn't get upset. She just said guiltily:
"Rose, Jack really has wronged you in this. But he truly only sees Lily as a sister."
"You know what they say - it takes a hundred years of fate to ride in the same boat, a thousand years to share the same bed. You and Jack have come so far together. It hasn't been easy."
"How about this - forgive Jack just this once. I promise if there's ever a next time, all the houses, cars, and company shares will go to you. Jack will leave with nothing but the clothes on his back. How's that?"
With Mrs. Wilson's guarantee, given her authority in the family, Jack also knelt on the ground, looking at me with red-rimmed eyes.
"Rose, I promise from now on, I'll cut ties with Lily completely."
"I swear I'll never contact her again. Please forgive me this one time."
My parents wanted to object, but I held them back.
I pulled out a document folder from my bag. Inside was a divorce agreement, different from the one I had shown Jack before. This one stipulated that Jack would leave the marriage with nothing.
