Chapter 20
"We should all get some ice cream," Seraphina mumbled as we traveled through the heat.
Apparently, the coven Layla lived in the forest, hidden in an unknown cave. They used their manipulations of physics to make the cave seem invisible to the human eye, keeping their existence a secret. I hate to admit it, but I do admire the vampires' gifts. Sometimes, I even envied them.
"I agree, I could really go for strawberry ice cream," Julie agreed.
"Well, once we talk with the Blackmore coven, we can grab some. Sounds good?" Rocco suggested with a small smile.
Everyone nodded with enthusiasm, except for Athos, he remained emotionless. It's as if he's so used to being guarded and cold that opening up is almost impossible to him. He had a longing in his eyes as he watched us from a distance, afraid to come any closer.
Scared of ruining our happiness.
"Athos, what's your favorite flavor?" Seraphina suddenly asked, jogging over to the lonesome Alpha.
Athos frowned, his icy eyes flicking to her warm, brown ones. He didn't want to speak nor bother with our goofy ideas. But my sister didn't care, she was going to get through to him, I have seen that determination before.
To us, Athos liked his space, but to my sister he needed us. She's the type of wolf to never leave someone behind in their mind's darkness, she was always guiding them towards the light. She stared at him, reading through his locked pages.
We all watched when she suddenly cupped his cheek, despite the discomfort in his eyes. She then felt his forehead, her lips turning into a frown.
"You feel warm, you okay?" She asked.
He grabbed her wrist, gently, as if he were caressing it. He held it longer than needed, savoring the feel of her. He quickly placed her hand beside her hip, letting go as if her touch burned him.
"I don't like people touching me," he stated calmly.
She rolled her eyes, "Well, suck it up, grandpa."
"Grandpa?"
His lips twitched a little, begging him to let them smile. But he forced it away with a flash of fear mixed with shame, making sure he showed not a single emotion. On the outside, he was like a statue, lacking any realistic emotions. But I know, on the inside, he's a broken man who's trying to fit in. He took a step away from her, shutting her out before she could finish stepping through his guarded heart. He then walked further along the path, his body shaking when he began to cough violently. The frightening coughs ended quickly, allowing him to continue his traveling.
"He's ill," Seraphina mumbled. "He doesn't have that virus, does he?"
Julie frowned, "What virus?"
"Apparently there's a virus killing werewolves, we don't know how it started. They're calling it Rogue Flu."
"Gods, I hope not, maybe we should rest," Julie stated, facing Rocco.
Rocco nodded, looking up at the pink sky, "It's getting late anyway."
The forest lulled me to sleep by its lullaby, singing each syllable through the howling winds. Vincent had me pressed to his chest in a protective manner, making sure nothing could take me. We were all scattered across the clearing, Athos taking the farthest end.
Throughout the night Athos would get into violent coughing fits, scaring us awake. I often found my sister sitting beside him, giving him water so he could have a minute's rest. Circles began to form under her eyes, but she refused to sleep with Athos suffering. By morning, Athos seemed worn out, his skin pale and his face flushed.
Seraphina attempted to check him for a fever, but he growled at her touch, his eyes flashing gold. With a yelp of surprise, she jumped away from him.
"Leave me alone," he snarled.
She swallowed nervously, her eyes wide, "You're sick."
"It's allergies, leave me be."
"That's not—
"I said, leave me alone."
He left no room for argument as his command washed over her, causing my sister to stiffen. I internally groaned when I saw the spark of anger in her, knowing she was about to ignore his orders.
"Do you not care that a deadly virus is going around? It could kill you!" She snapped.
He glared at her, "Then let it."
Those words succeeded in silencing us all, leaving us in shock. Everything seemed to go still as he stormed off, his dark hair sticking to the sides of his face from sweat. My sister clenched her jaw, her brown eyes growing darker.
"Asshole!" She screamed.
"I know I'm an asshole!" He retorted from somewhere in the woods.
"When I get my hands on y—
"I don't want your hands on me!"
"I bet you would if they went lower!"
My eyes widened, "SERAPHINA!"
"What? He would! He probably has a small dick anyway."
"You can't just say things like that!"
She shrugged, "Yes, I can."
"I can assure you, my dick matches the title of Alpha," Athos sneered as he walked back into the clearing.
Seraphina raised an eyebrow, "Oh? So...you make it sound intimidating with your words but when you really get down to business, it disappoints you?"
He narrowed his eyes, "Do you want me to pull down my pants and prove it?"
"Please, do not agree to it! He will do it, I'm not kidding. He's very proud!" Rocco shrieked.
"Go right ahead," Seraphina scoffed.
"Oh for the love of gods," Rocco groaned.
"So....he's loaded?" I smirked.
Seraphina nodded, her face still pale, "Oh yeah. It's fucking delux sized."
