Chapter 29

"Do you think my uncle will be okay?" Vincent asked as we sat in our room.

I nodded, "Physically, but my sister will help him mentally. She cares about him more than anything else."

"She's good for him, but vampires are envious creatures. Layla will try to harm her."

"Aren't we going to kill her?"

"If she makes a move to attack any of us, Dominic will kill her. But I'm worried, Layla loves to use silver bullets."

I frowned, "How did you figure this out?"

"My dad talked to a few vampires that are against Layla. They told him everything, including who her fiance is," he explained.

"Who is he?"

He sighed, "A prince from the European vampires. He's strong, he may not allow us to get close to Layla."

"Unless Dominic's friend helps, she's a witch apparently."

He blew out a breath before pulling me close and kissing me on the temple. I smiled against his chest, enjoying the warmth and comfort his touch brought. After our night together, I had gained another memory. It was of us going to an amusement park, that's when I discovered Vincent's fear of heights.

"I love you," I whispered, kissing his jaw.

He smiled, "I love you too, baby girl."

"How is he?" I yawned, stepping into Athos' room.

"Awake."

I froze when I realized my sister wasn't there, but Athos was wide awake. I smiled and immediately sat down, questioning him about how he was feeling.

"You talk a lot," he mumbled.

I shrugged, "Well, you should get used to it. Once I and Vince get married some day, you'll have to deal with it every day."

"Right," he scoffed. "Only family will have to tolerate it. And I'm not that."

I frowned, "You are though."

"Maybe to you and Vincent, but not to my brother and sister—in—law. I'm a monster and murderer to them."

"You're not—

"I gave that order to my beta to kill Dominic, I'm to blame."

I paled, "You...why?"

"He was threatening my warrior, he almost killed the one. I told my beta to only injure him enough that he won't hurt Ryan. But...he shot him in the chest...I still gave the order though. If I hadn't...then my beta wouldn't have shot him. But my warrior would have died, what type of Alpha would I be? I tried keeping my nephew safe, but...I failed."

"It was an accident."

"I still killed him though," he stated before giving a bemused laugh. "It's sort of funny...I have always considered them family while they wanted me dead."

A tear rolled down his cheek before he quickly wiped it away, he stared at the drop on his thumb and sneered.

"And I still fucking love them, go figure," he snarled.

My heart skipped a beat at the look of rage in him. When Seraphina walked in, I relaxed and gave her a look. She furrowed my eyebrows before sitting on his bed and cupping his face.

"Shhhhh," she whispered, stroking his cheek. "I'm here."

He stared at her, his eyes flashing gold before he allowed her to soothe him. He eventually relaxed, but looked away, ashamed.

"Alphas can cry too," I murmured, knowing what was going through his head. Dominic was the same way.

Seraphina smiled, "You can always cry in front of us. We won't judge."

He glanced at us, hesitant at first, but then he allowed himself to break. The wall around his heart cracking just a little.
