Chapter 33
"We're almost to the palace," Rocco announced, pulling Vincent and I from our slumber.
"Oh, joy," Athos replied, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Hey, you never know, Layla could actually be nice."
"Right, and I'm Eminem."
"You're terrible at rapping though," Vincent mumbled.
I groaned, "He's being sarcastic, Vince."
"Ohhhh....my bad."
"Athos, if you move one more fucking time, I will rip your balls off and give them to Layla as a gift. Quit moving!" Seraphina suddenly snapped.
Everyone looked at her with surprise as she kicked Athos in the leg. The alpha only raised an eyebrow at her, his lips twitching from amusement.
Julie blew out a breath, "Well, she's not a morning person."
"It's six in the evening..." I commented.
"Maybe Athos is just annoying," Vincent smirked, giving his uncle a playful look.
Athos flipped him off before going completely still as my sister glared at him. I chuckled when she laid her head in his lap again and fell asleep, a small smile coming to her face.
Rocco shook his head with mirth, his eyes sparkling for a moment. As if seeing his brother actually relax a little was the greatest thing.
I eventually decided to go back to sleep, knowing I would need to be alert for tonight. Who knows how Layla will react to seeing Athos, apparently, werewolves and vampires are forbidden to date in her world. Hybrids were dangerous to not only humans, but us as well. The vampires' and werewolves' strengths are combined and their ability to heal is quicker. Even with silver, they're almost impossible to take down. Alas, I pushed the thought from my head so I could actually sleep.
I had half expected Vincent to move me away from him, like Dominic had whenever I attempted to cuddle. But he didn't, he welcomed my advances with a gentle kiss on the temple.
"Go to sleep, baby girl," he murmured.
I smiled, "As much as I care for Dom, I'm glad he isn't my mate."
Vincent stared at me for a moment, an odd emotion flashed in his eyes. For a second, it represented love, but the next moment he was watching me with awe. I grabbed his hand and kissed it, too lazy to kiss him on the cheek. He chuckled, telling me to get my lazy ass to sleep before he tickles me awake. With one last playful hit, I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
"We're here."
My eyes fluttered open, revealing night's dark sky. I laid on the seat for a few seconds, admiring the dancing stars before I was forced into reality. Climbing to my feet, I stood completely still beside Vincent. My hand nervously clung onto his, searching for my mate's reassurance. Standing a few feet away, Athos was holding my sister close to him, scanning the area around us.
Rocco took a deep breath and faced the darkened path, leading to the palace. He glanced towards his brother, quietly asking if he was ready for this. With a nod from Athos, we began walking towards the creepy driveway.
"I don't like this," Julie mumbled.
Rocco tightened his grip around her, "Neither do I."
"None of us do, but Athos needs closure," Vincent voiced.
Behind us, Athos released a shaky breath, showing how nervous he was. I could hear my sister attempting to soothe him, but he wasn't having it.
"If she or anyone else makes one move to hurt one of us, then Dominic will attack, correct?" Athos questioned.
Vincent nodded, "Layla is our biggest concern, she's a bit unstable, according to other vampires."
"Well, we'll see when we get there. She may welcome us or....she'll attempt to kill us," Rocco sounded.
I swallowed my growing fear, knowing the vampires were addicted to the smell. Vincent kissed me on my head and whispered how much her loves me, causing me to look up. I smiled and kissed him on the lips, mumbling the same words.
"Uh, guys?" Athos suddenly sounded, drawing our attention to him. "Whatever happens...I am truly sorry for how I acted. I....I'm sorry."
He was shaking by now, trying to fight his wolf as he allowed himself to open up. Despite the brave step, I knew this wouldn't last. He will soon shut us all out, refusing to get close ever again.
Rocco and Julie had destroyed his trust.
"You have nothing to be sorry for," Rocco replied. "We do."
Athos frowned, but didn't say another word, he was building his walls up again.
"Well, isn't that cute? Too bad Athos is truly a monster, your words won't mean anything to the animal within."
We all stopped and stared at the woman standing before us, a smirk was settled upon her red lips. With the grace of a goddess, she strode towards us, her amber eyes trained in Athos.
"Hello, babe," she sneered before tilting her head. "Missed me?"
